Comparison of technologies for CO2 capture from cement production, part 2, cost analysis (CEMCAP)

A techno-economic comparison of CO2 capture for a modelled best-available-technology European cement plant (3,000 tonnes of clinker a day): the reference plant without capture and the same plant with MEA absorption, oxyfuel, chilled ammonia (CAP), membrane-assisted CO2 liquefaction (MAL), and calcium looping in a tail-end and an integrated configuration. Table 6 gives the cost of clinker for each, in 2014 euros per tonne of clinker, on one set of prices (coal 3 euros per gigajoule, electricity 58.1 euros per megawatt-hour, 8% discount rate, 91.3% capacity factor) and with no carbon tax. The text states that capture raises the cost of clinker by 49-92%. Capture covers most but not all of the plant's emissions.

  • The version of record (energies-12-00542.pdf, 20 pages) behind ETH Zurich's one-page download cover, 21 pages in all. Read: PDF page 7 (cost figures in 2014 euros), page 9 (no carbon tax in variable OPEX; Table 4 prices), page 10 (section 4.1: "increases with 49–92%") and page 11 (Table 6, cost of clinker). The URL answers scripted requests (HTTP 200 on 2026-10-08, application/pdf, about 2.1 MB), but ETH regenerates the cover page on every download, so a person records one copy with uv run envdash snapshot add --source gardarsdottir-2019 --artifact article-pdf --file <path>. MDPI's own copy (https://www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/12/3/542/pdf) may be recorded the same way instead after a browser download; the page numbers above then shift down by one.
