Data

Times people were forced from home by weather-related disasters, by hazard (estimated)

How many times people were forced to leave their homes, staying within their own country, because of floods, storms, wildfires, landslides, droughts and other weather-related disasters, worldwide, each year since 2008, by hazard. Calculated from IDMC's event data by adding up IDMC's estimate for each event with a reported figure. These are movements, not people: one person displaced twice is counted twice, and pre-emptive evacuations are included. IDMC records far more events than it did as monitoring and reporting widened (its file has 1,044 weather-related event rows for 2008 and 7,064 for 2025), so a rise is not evidence that disasters are becoming more frequent. The figures are weather-related; they are not attributed to climate change. For 2008 and 2010–2016, IDMC gives China's displacement as one figure a year that is not split by hazard, so it is not in those years' sums and they are not comparable with later ones; each year's note gives the figures left out. 701 weather-related event rows in this release have no reported figure and are left out, not counted as zero. Totals printed in IDMC's Global Report on Internal Displacement are built differently and are not used.

What was done to it

  1. Read the sheet '1_Disaster_Displacement_data' of IDMC's GIDD disaster export (README: last update 2026-08-31, extracted 2026-10-05; recorded 2026-10-12, sha256 25c78f150cff…): 44,335 rows for 2008–2025, one per disaster event in a country and year.

    Code: pipeline/src/envdash/transforms/impacts/idmc_gidd.py · code sha256 0e992bbeff94140a… · inputs 25c78f150cff…

  2. Kept the 41,821 rows whose Hazard Category is 'Weather related' (IDMC's own category, CRED EM-DAT classification). Left out 2,084 'Geophysical' rows (earthquakes, volcanic activity and dry mass movement) and 430 'Mixed disasters' rows (displacement IDMC does not assign to one hazard). For China, IDMC gives one 'Mixed disasters' row a year in 2008 and 2010–2016, so China's displacement in those years is not in the sums; nothing is estimated in its place. 'Mixed disasters' figures left out, by year: 2008 26,822,000; 2009 130,000; 2010 18,584,000; 2011 9,402,232; 2012 11,135,953; 2013 12,168,639; 2014 6,150,513; 2015 6,444,000; 2016 9,143,000; 2024 19,132; 2025 531,353; each year's total carries a note with them.

    Code: pipeline/src/envdash/transforms/impacts/idmc_gidd.py · code sha256 0e992bbeff94140a… · inputs 25c78f150cff…

  3. Added up the raw figure (Disaster Internal Displacements (Raw)) of these rows by Year, the year IDMC reports the displacement in, and by IDMC's Hazard Type, and over all nine types, as whole numbers. The rounded column is not used.

    Code: pipeline/src/envdash/transforms/impacts/idmc_gidd.py · code sha256 0e992bbeff94140a… · inputs 25c78f150cff…

  4. Left out the 701 weather-related rows with no reported figure; they are never counted as zero, and each value whose rows include some carries a note with their number. Rows with a figure and without one, by year: 2008 1,044/0; 2009 1,576/1; 2010 1,609/0; 2011 1,655/2; 2012 1,675/3; 2013 2,065/65; 2014 2,362/42; 2015 1,877/5; 2016 2,182/26; 2017 867/0; 2018 1,548/0; 2019 1,835/32; 2020 1,796/25; 2021 1,176/368; 2022 2,263/16; 2023 3,774/57; 2024 4,778/33; 2025 7,038/26.

    Code: pipeline/src/envdash/transforms/impacts/idmc_gidd.py · code sha256 0e992bbeff94140a… · inputs 25c78f150cff…

  5. A hazard type with no row in a year has no value for that year. No check against the totals printed in IDMC's Global Report on Internal Displacement: they are built differently and are not used.

What it covers

Geography
World: the countries and territories in IDMC's event file (ISO 3166 codes, plus AB9 for the Abyei Area)
Basis
IDMC's estimates of internal displacements (forced movements within a country, pre-emptive evacuations included) for disaster events whose Hazard Category is 'Weather related' (CRED EM-DAT classification), added up by the year IDMC reports them in and by IDMC's Hazard Type. Geophysical events (earthquakes, volcanic activity, dry mass movement) and IDMC's 'Mixed disasters' (displacement not assigned to one hazard, including China's yearly figure for 2008 and 2010–2016) are left out. Mass movement here is landslides, wet mass movement and avalanches; extreme temperature is cold waves and heat waves. Only events with a reported figure are counted. Displacement by drought, which builds up slowly, is harder to monitor than displacement by sudden events. Weather-related, not attributed to climate change.
Unit
internal displacements (movements, not people) (displacements)
