Food Waste Index Report 2024

Estimates of food waste (food and associated inedible parts such as bones and peels) in 2022 at household, food service (out-of-home consumption) and retail level: global tonnes and kilograms per person per year, averages by income group and region, and household estimates by country with a confidence rating (many country values are extrapolated). SDG indicator 12.3.1b, with UNEP as custodian. The 2019 estimates of the 2021 report used different data and methods, so the two editions are not a trend.

Files

  • The English report (191 pages): Table 1 and Table 23 give global food waste in 2022 by sector (tonnes and kg per person per year); Annex 3 lists household estimates by country (M49 code, kg per person per year, tonnes per year, confidence). Country food service and retail tables are in the report's separate Appendix, which is not registered here. A person opens https://wedocs.unep.org/handle/20.500.11822/45230 in a web browser, downloads food_waste_index_report_2024.pdf (the English file, not the _PT or _SP translations), and records it with `uv run envdash snapshot add --source unep-food-waste-index-2024 --file food_waste_index_report_2024.pdf`. The snapshot recorded on 2026-10-05 (sha256 14d3955a9d58…, 26,521,890 bytes) is the Internet Archive capture of that producer URL made on 2024-03-28 (https://web.archive.org/web/20240328101605/https://wedocs.unep.org/bitstream/handle/20.500.11822/45230/food_waste_index_report_2024.pdf), the same capture the licence quote was read from; its manifest note says so.
